Crocheting is fun, but it also can get really expensive, and that is less fun. I’m gonna be honest, finding nice yarn for cheap is hard, but not impossible. There are also little everyday objects that you can use to aid you in crocheting.
Yarns!
Yarn is so much fun, and frustrating. Not all yarn was made equal, so it’s important to pay attention to what you want form a project and choosing yarn accordingly.
There are 7 types of yarn by weight, so their biggest differences is size. The seven types are as follows-
- Lace (Really really really small, used for micro chrocheting)
2. Fingering
3. Sport(soft actually, used for baby blankets)
4. DK
5. Worsted(this is probably what you’ll find first)
6. Bulky
7. Super Bulky
8. Jumbo
What does any of this mean though? Again it goes back to size, and depending on what hook you have, that should dictate what yarn you use, or the other way around. But I’m getting ahead of myself. So we have size, but then there is material. Most yarn will be some type of wool or cotton mixed with acrylic, or just mixed with acrylic material. Also, read the labels, don’t throw them away, you never know if your yarn is washable or not until you look. There are yarns that are pure wool, cotton or pure silk but these guys tends to be more expensive then the mixed yarns. Below are some links to general retail yarns, but always keep an eye out for deals and discounts.
*Dollar store has some yarn that is usually worsted or Sport, but it’s only available in stores, and it’s actually really nice and holds up quite well*
Hooks
Hooks are pretty easy actually, you either get your hook first and that helps you figure out what yarn you use or you have yarn and you find a hook that works. Most hook are made of aluminum or steel, but there are some wood hooks, but as long as it’s the right size it should be fine. To be honest I’ve have used a 4 mm hook for the past three years and that has worked for most yarns, worsted, DK and even Bulky(still trying to figure that one out). It is still good to have a couple different hooks, I have found that Dollar store has pack of aluminum hooks that hold quite well, love those packs.
*There are little accessories that are meant to help crocheters keep count of rows or stitches, mitigate cramps, but they can get pricy. Paper clips can help in counting stitches and rows, even small rubber bands will do.
I hope this is helpful!
